Life in Corona prison goes on. Maia did online classes and I worked on memoir and Zoomed a new “Mom and Duane” episode and Jenny navigated online food ordering. I talked with my friend over on 88th who I was worried about, she went to bed sick and exhausted on Saturday, but yesterday she was her sassy self and was pleased to know she’s on page 2 of my memoir. She presented the first Prairie Home Companion show back in 1974: it was at Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, which was devoted to the avant-garde and we were rear-guard, but she didn’t care, she liked what she liked. She’s 85 and yesterday she was 19. Talked to our pal the widow of West End and she was having dinner with her boyfriend. Spoke to my agnostic pal in St. Paul who confessed to being depressed and I invited him join Morning Prayer online, that we Episcos accept everyone even those who fail to understand the whole picture, which got him to laugh heartily. I got my daughter to laugh by demonstrating bird calls, the difference between the gull, tern, cormorant, and grommet, four different shrieks. I made Jenny laugh by pointing to a picture of her at age 9 and mentioning that I got married that year. Oh boy. The sun was out and we lay outside on the balcony. Hamburgers for supper and then the 7 p.m. neighborhood applause and then the nightly game of Uno. I still want to do shows but it’s a pleasure to have forced retirement. I need time. I pray for discernment. Four heroes of mine died violent deaths when I was very young, Barry, Buddy, Leeds, and Roger, and their memory has stayed with me for sixty years. I got a good long life and do not feel I’ve earned it. What to do? We’ll meet on Zoom at 7:45 and pray for the sick and those in need and I will mention many of you. Lord show us the way.
